Twin Falls

Twin Falls

Description

Twin Falls is a waterfall in Kakadu National Park where two streams cascade through a gorge bounded by red cliffs. The water drops about 51 meters in a series of steps, feeding large pools that are part of the South Alligator River system.

History

The Twin Falls gorge has been carved over many thousands of years by rain and floods, much like the nearby Jim Jim Falls gorge. The river and waterfalls have shaped this region since ancient times, demonstrating how natural erosion has formed Kakadu's landscape.

Culture

The name Twin Falls refers to the two streams that flow side by side through the gorge, shaping how visitors experience this place. The site holds deep cultural significance for the Bininj and Mungguy people, whose ancestral stories and connection to the land span many generations.

Practical

Visitors need a high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicle with a snorkel to reach the car park via rough roads and water crossings. From there, a boat shuttle service transports visitors to the gorge and waterfalls, making the experience safer and more straightforward.

Did you know?

Unlike nearby waterfalls, Twin Falls displays two streams flowing calmly side by side rather than one powerful plunge, creating a sense of natural balance. The water flow persists longer throughout the year compared to other falls in the park, offering water to see even outside peak season.
