Pooram Exhibition
The Pooram Exhibition is an annual fair held on the Thekkinkadu Maidan in central Thrissur, running for over a month and coinciding with the Pooram festival. The grounds feature market stalls, business pavilions, amusement rides for children, and vendors selling local crafts, products, and food alongside government and private company displays.
Founded in 1932 as the Swadeshi Exhibition to promote Indian-made goods and local crafts, the event was later adopted by the city administration and main temples. In 1964, it was renamed the Thrissur Pooram Exhibition to align with the festival and has since grown into one of Kerala's largest fairs.
The exhibition displays handmade crafts and products created by local artisans and families from the region. Visitors encounter textiles, jewelry, and furniture alongside traditional performances and food stalls that showcase how people in Kerala blend everyday life with their heritage.
Entry requires a small fee and the fair remains open from morning until late evening, allowing plenty of time to explore. Visiting early in the morning or late in the evening is recommended to avoid the heaviest crowds and enjoy a more relaxed pace.
Every year, decorated elephants adorned with colorful ornaments are paraded across the grounds, offering visitors a glimpse into Kerala's deep connection between temple traditions and local celebrations. This spectacle demonstrates how the fair weaves together ancient customs with everyday commerce and entertainment.
