Promenable Bleue, Hiking trail in Nanterre, France
The Promenade Bleue is a shared walking and cycling path in Nanterre, running along the Seine through the Hauts-de-Seine department. It connects Colombes to Rueil-Malmaison, passing through parks and riverside green spaces on a flat, paved surface.
The route was built on an old towpath along the Seine that had fallen into disuse over the years. Around 10 years ago the path was restored and upgraded, and in 2010 a footbridge was added to link Nanterre to the opposite bank.
The Promenade Bleue follows the line of an old towpath where horses once pulled boats upstream along the Seine. That origin explains why the trail runs so close to the water's edge, with open views across the river at many points.
The path is flat and easy to follow, making it a good choice for families and cyclists of all levels. The footbridge has steps, so cyclists carrying trailers or heavy loads should take the short detour along the nearby low-traffic road.
Since 2023, the name Promenade Bleue has been extended to cover all the riverbanks along the Seine across the whole department, not just this stretch. The trail is also part of the Avenue Verte, an international cycling route linking Paris to London.
