Amii, Research institute in Edmonton, Canada
Amii, or the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute, is an artificial intelligence and machine learning research institute on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton, Canada. It brings together scientists, engineers, and students to develop tools and methods that can be applied across many sectors.
Amii grew out of efforts to bring together the AI expertise that had been building at the University of Alberta over several decades. Over time, it became one of the leading AI research centers in Canada, recognized internationally for its work on machine learning.
The institute sits on the University of Alberta campus, which is easy to navigate on foot with clear signage throughout. Anyone interested in public events or workshops should check announcements in advance, as not all areas are open to walk-in visitors.
One of the institute's core research areas is reinforcement learning, a method where computers learn from experience rather than from fixed rules, much like a person picking up a new skill through practice. Some of its researchers hold the title of Canada CIFAR AI Chair, a formal designation recognizing leading AI researchers across the country.
