Alacahöyük Museum, Museum in Alaca, Turkey

The Alacahöyük Museum is a small archaeological museum in the village of Alacahöyük, in the Alaca district of Çorum province. It sits beside the ancient mound and displays objects ranging from the Chalcolithic period through to the Phrygian era, alongside an ethnographic section with traditional tools, textiles and Ottoman-period items.

The museum opened in 1940, making it the first local museum in the region. In 1982, the collection moved into a new building constructed within the old ruins, bringing the exhibits closer to where the objects were found.

The halls inside are named after archaeologists who led the excavations at the site. This gives each room a personal connection to the people who uncovered the objects on display.

It is worth visiting both the museum and the archaeological site next door, as the two complement each other. The entrance to the grounds is right beside the museum building, so moving between the two is straightforward.

The building constructed in 1982 sits physically inside the ancient ruins, so the museum is itself part of the archaeological landscape. A small souvenir shop just across from the entrance sells items connected to the excavations, offering a tangible way to end the visit.
