Karatay Madrasa, Madrasa and museum in Konya, Turkey

Karatay Madrasa is a 13th-century Islamic school turned museum, located in the Şemsitebrizi neighborhood along Ankara Street in the center of Konya, Turkey. The stone structure is one story high and organized around a domed courtyard, with a single large vaulted hall, an east-facing entrance made of sky and white marble, and small rooms along the sides.

The madrasa was built in 1251 by Emir Celaleddin Karatay during the reign of Sultan Izzettin Keykavus II, and served as a school for religious sciences through the Seljuk and later Ottoman periods. It was eventually converted into a museum, and restoration work carried out between 2006 and 2008 uncovered ancient water channels beneath the floors.

The tiles covering the interior walls show geometric and floral patterns in turquoise, navy blue, and black, typical of Seljuk decorative art. These patterns are built directly into the structure and shape the overall impression of the space.

The building sits in the center of Konya and is easy to reach on foot from other nearby historical sites. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon is a good idea, as the light at those times brings out the warmth of the stone walls.

In the southern part of the building, a domed room holds the tomb of Celaleddin Karatay, the man who commissioned the madrasa, making the founder literally part of the structure he created. Near the dome transition, the names of four major prophets and the first four Islamic caliphs are inscribed on the walls, a detail many visitors walk past without noticing.
