Hamsilos Bay, Bay on the İnceburun peninsula, Sinop, Turkey
Hamsilos Koyu is a narrow bay on the İnceburun peninsula, about 11 kilometers north of Sinop city center. The inlet stretches deep inland, flanked by forests, and opens toward the sea near the mouth of the Deveci Deresi stream.
The bay formed when rising sea levels after the last ice age flooded the valley of the Deveci Deresi stream. This process created a ria, a type of drowned river valley, though it is commonly mistaken for a fjord.
The road gets very rough near the bay, so the last stretch has to be done on foot from the parking area. The surrounding nature park charges a small entry fee, but the bay itself is open to all visitors.
Seen from above, the bay's outline resembles a dog's head, which is one reason locals also call it Hamsaroz. In the past, its hidden position made it a shelter for warships caught in storms on the Black Sea.
