Sinop Castle

Sinop Castle is a fortress along the Black Sea coast built with thick stone walls and multiple defensive towers. The structure stretches across a significant area with several lookout points offering views over the sea and surrounding city.

Settlers from Miletus built the original fortification in the 8th century BC, and Genoese traders later expanded it in the 14th century. These different periods left their mark through various layers of construction visible in the walls.

The fortress served as a major hub where merchants exchanged fabrics, copper, glass, and grain moving between European and Asian markets. Today visitors can observe how its position allowed control over these important trade corridors.

Visitors can climb the various towers to enjoy views across the bay and explore the surrounding landscape from different angles. Morning or late afternoon visits work best when lighting is pleasant and fewer people are around.

The stone walls feature archer windows throughout, allowing defenders to monitor the surroundings while staying protected. This design demonstrates thoughtful military engineering that shaped the fortress layout.
