Şuayb Antik Şehri, Ancient city and archaeological site in Turkey
Şuayb Antik Şehri is an ancient city and archaeological site near Harran, in Şanlıurfa province, southeastern Turkey. The remains are carved directly into limestone outcrops and include rock-cut houses, cisterns, and tomb chambers set into the hillside.
The site shows traces of occupation from the Roman and Byzantine periods, with walls and structures still visible at ground level. It later came under Arab control for several centuries, a period reflected in its Arabic name meaning 'city of the ancient people'.
The site takes its name from the Prophet Shuayb, who local tradition says lived and preached here. One of the rock-cut caves is still pointed out to visitors as the place where he is said to have stayed.
The ground is uneven throughout the site, so sturdy footwear is strongly recommended before setting out. Summer temperatures in this part of Turkey are very high and shade is sparse, so bringing water and sun protection matters.
Some of the tomb chambers on site have interiors decorated with geometric patterns and inscriptions that are easy to miss from the outside. The doorways are low and narrow, so visitors have to stoop before they can see the carvings inside.
