Mercado 4 is a large, open-air market spread across several blocks in central Asunción, with rows of bright orange tents, narrow walkways, and tightly packed stalls. Its layout includes areas for fresh produce, meat, clothing, household goods, and small eateries, all arranged in a dense grid that feels more like a neighborhood of tiny shops than a single building.
The market opened in the early 1940s when the city government moved traders from an older market called Mercado Guasu to a newly acquired piece of land. Over the following decades it expanded beyond its original block, gradually absorbing parts of the nearby San Roque and Pinozá neighborhoods.
The market is a daily meeting point where buyers and sellers often know each other by name, and bargaining or chatting over a stall is part of the routine. Many small eateries inside serve sopa paraguaya, empanadas, and fresh fruit juices, giving a direct taste of local food habits without leaving the aisles.
Wear comfortable shoes because the ground can be uneven and the aisles are narrow, especially in the busiest morning hours. The market is easiest to navigate on foot, and it helps to carry cash in small bills since many vendors do not accept cards.
