Ministry of Interior building, Government building in al-Olaya, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
The Ministry of Interior building is a six-story government building in the al-Olaya district of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It has a tan-colored facade with a stack of long horizontal overhangs forming a ribbed, inverted stepped design, topped by a broad shallow dome, and the lower section features arched glass entrances beneath shallow domes, partly hidden by tall palm trees.
The exterior design was completed in 1980 by a Canada-based firm, and construction took place between 1980 and 1989 by Hyundai E&C. The ministry fully moved its offices into the building in 1992, and the interior of the dome was manufactured by Zahner between 1988 and 1990.
The building is a well-known landmark in Riyadh, often called the Flying Saucer or the Spaceship by Western visitors because of its shape. During national holidays such as Saudi National Day and Saudi Founding Day, it is lit in green, the color of the national flag, which has become a familiar sight for residents.
The building is best viewed from the street or nearby public areas, as it is an active government office and public access inside is limited. Visitors can easily combine a stop here with other nearby landmarks in the al-Olaya district, and the site is most striking when illuminated at night.
The building's unusual shape has earned it nicknames like the Flying Saucer and the Spaceship among Western visitors. It stands 55 meters high, and its green illumination during national holidays has become a tradition that many people look forward to.
