Darah, Cultural institution in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives, known as the Darah, is a cultural institution in the Al Murabba neighborhood of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It sits between the Murabba Palace compound and the National Museum, and it houses the King Abdulaziz Memorial Hall and the King Abdulaziz Private Library.
The Darah was established in September 1972 by a royal decree of King Faisal. In 1999, it became part of the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, and it continues to preserve documents and archives related to the kingdom's history.
The name Darah means house or institution, and locals often refer to it simply as the Darah. Inside, the memorial hall displays personal items of King Abdulaziz, and the library serves as a quiet place for researchers and families to explore national history.
The Darah is in the Al Murabba area, close to the National Museum, so you can walk between them. It is best to visit in the morning or late afternoon when the area is less crowded, and the building is accessible for most visitors.
The Darah runs a program called 'Antami' that produces animated series like 'Ya'rub' to teach young people about Arabian history. It also holds oral history recordings with narrators and elders, capturing voices that are not found in written records.
