Klatovy, Historical municipality in Plzeň Region, Czech Republic.
Klatovy is a town in the Plzeň Region with a layered architectural heritage spanning many centuries. The old town contains numerous churches, towers, and preserved buildings from different periods that shape the townscape.
The trade route to Bavaria led King Ottokar II. to establish Klatovy as a royal town between 1260 and 1263. The settlement then grew into an important hub for commerce and regional affairs.
The Black Tower stands prominently in the town center and shows the architectural style of the 16th century. Both locals and visitors use this tower as a central landmark to find their way around the town.
The town is divided into around 30 districts connected by public transportation. Visitors will find easy movement between different areas and should allow time to explore the central zones.
Underground catacombs beneath the town have held remains of Jesuit monks and nobility since the 17th century. The natural ventilation system of these tunnels made this unusual form of preservation possible.
