Špičák, Mountain summit in Šumava Mountains, Czech Republic
Spitzberg is a mountain summit in the Bohemian Forest, in the Czech part of the Šumava region, close to the Bavarian border. The peak has ski runs for winter use and marked hiking trails that remain open through the warmer months.
The Spitzberg was developed as a winter sports area in the early 20th century, when tourism first reached this part of the Šumava region. Over the following decades, the infrastructure grew steadily to serve both winter and summer visitors.
The Spitzberg sits close to the German border, and visitors from both sides of the boundary regularly use its slopes and trails. This cross-border use gives the place a relaxed, mixed feel that sets it apart from purely local resorts.
A four-person chairlift runs from the base to the top during the winter season, making the summit easy to reach. Warm clothing is a good idea year-round, and it is worth checking current conditions before heading out since operations can change depending on weather and time of year.
The Závodní run, whose name means race track in Czech, is the most technical slope on the mountain and has hosted local competitions. Its gradient is noticeably steeper than the other runs, which makes it stand out even on a casual visit.
