Prague Castle Picture Gallery

The Prague Castle Picture Gallery occupies rooms within the Northern and Western wings of the castle complex and displays around 100 paintings from its collection. Visitors walk through historic spaces that showcase works by European masters such as Tizian, Veronese, and Rubens alongside paintings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

The collection began in the early 1600s when Emperor Rudolf II gathered thousands of artworks for the castle. After his death, a significant portion of these pieces relocated to Vienna, though important works remained to form the foundation of today's gallery.

The permanent exhibition presents Renaissance and Baroque masterworks by European painters including Tizian, Veronese, Tintoretto, Fetti, and Rubens.

The gallery is located within the castle grounds and can be reached through the main entrances and passageways of the complex. Plan to spend time exploring the rooms at a comfortable pace, and keep in mind that access may occasionally be affected by official castle events.

Excavations during the 1950s revealed remains of two medieval churches buried beneath the gallery spaces, including the tomb of Prince Spytihněv I from the 9th century. These discoveries demonstrate the layered history concealed within the castle's foundations.
