Roklanská chata, Mountain hut in Modrava, Czech Republic
Roklanská chata is a mountain hut situated at 1000 meters elevation in Sumava National Park, surrounded by peat bogs and the Rachel stream. The building occupies a remote corner of the park, far from villages and roads.
The hut was built in 1937 by the Czech Tourist Club and served as a starting point for hikers heading up Great Rachel mountain. It was created during a time when organized tourism first arrived in the region.
The hut displays traditional Czech mountain building methods and functioned as a gathering place for foresters and mountain lovers until 1948. Its simple construction reflects the harsh conditions of this high-altitude location.
The hut sits within a restricted zone of Sumava National Park and requires special permission from park authorities for visits. Hikers should check ahead and obtain approval before attempting to reach it, as not all areas are freely accessible.
Before World War II, this building was the highest permanently inhabited dwelling in the Bohemian Forest. This achievement makes it a remarkable testament to the early development of this remote area.
