Velká kotlina, Glacial cirque in Malá Morávka, Czech Republic.
Velká kotlina is a glacial cirque in the Praděd mountain range formed by ancient glaciers that carved steep rock walls into the landscape. The formation creates a natural amphitheater where you can see layers of rock and the deep erosion patterns left behind.
The cirque was shaped during the last Ice Age when glacial movement carved the valley and left deep depressions in the rock. This glacial action created the distinctive form visible today.
The nature reserve contains numerous botanical research stations where scientists study over 500 plant species throughout different seasons.
A hiking trail marked with blue blazes runs through the formation with information panels explaining the geology along the way. Access starts from a nearby trailhead and offers different routes depending on fitness level.
The formation supports specialized plants and insects adapted to the unique conditions of this elevation and microclimate. These organisms occur in this specific combination in very few comparable locations.
