Planetární stezka v Opavě, Educational planet trail in Opava, Czech Republic
The Planetary Trail in Opava is an educational path stretching about 13 kilometers with models of all eight planets and the moon distributed throughout the city and nearby areas. These models follow a consistent scale that shows where each celestial body would be positioned relative to the sun.
The idea for this educational path came about in 1997 and was completed by 2006. Moon models were added afterward to expand the educational content of the route.
The trail links recognizable city locations such as the Silesian Theater and botanical gardens into one coherent experience. Visitors discover these places in a fresh way as they encounter the planetary models positioned throughout the area.
Walking the complete trail takes about four hours and costs nothing to visit. You can pick up orientation materials and detailed information at the city's tourist information center.
The trail features two special asteroids named Oppavia and Silesia that were both discovered by local astronomer Johann Palisa. This sky observer identified a total of 122 asteroids throughout his scientific career.
