Franklin's Fort, Military defense fort in Douglas County, Kansas, United States
Franklin's Fort was a fortified structure in Douglas County built with a blockhouse, defensive walls, and storage areas constructed from local materials. The fort had a compact layout designed to store weapons and protect residents during violent territorial disputes.
Settlers built this fort in 1856 after seizing artillery and weapons from Missouri during a raid. Two major battles erupted that summer, leading to its abandonment when opposing forces set fires to nearby structures.
The fort served as a stronghold for settlers who opposed free-state policies during Kansas territorial expansion. Visitors can sense how this location represented a flashpoint in the struggle over slavery in the region.
The site consists of stone ruins, so visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and wear sturdy shoes. Weather conditions can change the accessibility of different parts of the location depending on the season.
After its military use ended, the stone structure was converted into a private residence for a local doctor. The building functioned as a home for several decades before being torn down in 1912.
