Nicollet Hotel, former hotel in Minneapolis
The Nicollet Hotel was a large hotel in downtown Minneapolis that opened in 1924 and offered over 600 rooms. It was built in an H-shaped layout and featured early 20th-century architecture with decorative details and sturdy brickwork.
The hotel was built in 1924 on the site of the older Nicollet House, which had stood since 1858 before being torn down. After decades of decline and a change of ownership in the 1970s, the building was demolished in 1991.
The Nicollet Hotel was a gathering place for Minneapolis society, hosting important meetings and celebrations over several decades. Many local businesses supplied materials for its construction, giving the building a special place in the community's memory.
The site where the hotel once stood is at the corner of Hennepin Avenue and Washington Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. Since the building no longer exists, the location is mainly of interest to those curious about the city's past.
The hotel was financed through an unusual community investment, with more than 300 Minneapolis residents buying shares to support the project. This form of collective funding was rare for a private building at the time and set this effort apart from typical hotel ventures.
