Nicollet Hotel, former hotel in Minneapolis
The Nicollet Hotel was a building in downtown Minneapolis that opened in 1924. It had over 600 rooms, was H-shaped in design, and displayed early 20th century architecture with decorative details and sturdy brickwork.
The hotel opened in 1924 as a modern building after the older Nicollet House from 1858 was demolished. Over time it declined in importance, was sold in the 1970s, and was eventually torn down in 1991.
The hotel was a gathering place for Minneapolis society and hosted important meetings and celebrations. Local residents viewed it with pride because many businesses contributed their products and materials to the building's construction.
The site where the hotel once stood is located downtown Minneapolis at the corner of Hennepin and Washington Avenues. The historic location is today part of the city's history and can be explored through the building's story.
The hotel was financed through an unusual community investment where over 300 Minneapolis residents bought shares to support the ambitious project. This shared funding made it a symbol of cooperation and progress in the city.
