The Hop, Tram system in Milwaukee, US
The Hop is a modern streetcar system in Milwaukee that connects several neighborhoods across the city using contemporary vehicles. The network links the intermodal station with downtown, the Lower East Side, and the Historic Third Ward through dedicated routes.
The city had an original streetcar network that began in the mid-19th century with horse-drawn vehicles and later switched to electric power. That system closed in 1958 before being revived decades later with the modern network.
The system received its name through a partnership with the Potawatomi Native American community, who contributed 10 million dollars to the project in 2017.
The streetcars run daily and are powered by overhead lines, though they can also operate on battery power when needed. You can board at any station without special preparation, as the system is straightforward to navigate.
The Lakefront L line extension, opened in April 2024, added 0.4 miles of track to serve The Couture high-rise development.
