Andrews Air Force Base, Military air base in Prince George's County, United States.
Andrews Air Force Base is a military air facility in Prince George's County, located southeast of Washington D.C. and covering roughly eleven square kilometers. The installation operates two main runways where military aircraft take off and land throughout the day.
The base began operations on May 2, 1943, initially serving as home to Republic P-47 Thunderbolts. In October 2009, it merged with Naval Air Facility Washington to become Joint Base Andrews.
The base takes its name from a general who led American forces in Europe during World War II. This namesake died in an aircraft crash in Iceland in 1943, just weeks after the facility began operations.
A visitor center manages entry to the base and requires advance security clearance for anyone planning to enter the grounds. The telephone contact point provides information about required documents and procedures.
Two specially modified Boeing 747 aircraft remain stationed here and only receive the call sign Air Force One when the President boards. These planes carry extensive communication systems that allow government business to continue even during flight.
