The Great Western Quicksilver Mine features deep tunnels and extraction facilities spread across the mountainous terrain of Lake County, California.
Established in 1872, the mine employed 25 white miners and 200 Chinese workers until its closure in 1909 when mercury deposits were depleted.
Helen Rocca Goss, daughter of superintendent Andrew Rocca, documented daily life and working conditions of miners and their families at the site.
The mine location at coordinates 38°42′54″N 122°38′30″W remains accessible through maintained roads in Lake County's mining district.
This California Point of Historical Interest produced substantial quantities of mercury, essential for industrial processes during the late 19th century.
