Abbott Graves House
Abbott Graves House, Prairie School residence in Kennebunkport, United States.
The Abbott Graves House is a two-story white stucco building with a broad hipped roof and protruding sections that define the Prairie School style. The horizontal articulation and low-pitched roofline create a structure that sits naturally within its riverside location.
Built in 1905, the house served as the private residence of Abbott Fuller Graves and represents an early example of Prairie School design on the East Coast. Its listing on the National Register in 1980 marked official recognition of its architectural importance.
The building displays Frank Lloyd Wright's design approach through its strong horizontal lines and varied window patterns that seem to open toward the river. These features create a clear visual connection between the interior and the natural surroundings outside.
The house sits on the east side of Ocean Avenue, south of downtown Kennebunkport, with clear views toward the Kennebunk River. It remains visible from the public road, making it accessible for exterior viewing without entering private property.
Only two Prairie School structures exist in Maine, making this house a rare example of the style in New England. The other comparable work, Ward Hinckley House, sits in Blue Hill, creating an unusual pairing of these designs within the state.
