Capt. Nathaniel Lord Mansion, Federal architecture mansion in Kennebunkport Historic District, US.
Capt. Nathaniel Lord Mansion is a three-story structure with a central entrance adorned by a transom and sidelights following classical Federal proportions. The building sits on an earlier foundation and retains its original facade and interior layout.
The current structure was built in 1810 for Samuel Lewis, a cabinetmaker and carpenter. An earlier building from 1762 was incorporated as an attached wing, blending two periods of construction.
The mansion displays the classical Federal style features that define Kennebunkport's architectural character throughout the neighborhood. The carefully crafted facade with its symmetrical details reflects the taste and skills of the craftspeople who built it.
The building sits within Kennebunkport Historic District, an area containing many historical buildings from before 1925. Access is on foot, and daytime visits work best for viewing the facade details clearly.
The earlier 1762 building that survived as a wing contained a notable spiral staircase leading to a skylight on the second level. This architectural detail became known locally as 'Samuel's Stairs'.
