Lake Compounce Carousel
Lake Compounce Carousel, Historic carousel in Southington, United States
Description
The Lake Compounce Carousel is a ride in the Lake Compounce amusement park with 18 rows of positions, including 16 rows of three horses each, a chariot, and a goat figure. The entire structure sits inside a 12-sided wooden building with a cupola rising from its center.
History
The carousel was designed and built by Charles I. D. Looff in 1890 but did not arrive at Lake Compounce until 1911, after operating at Savin Rock Amusement Park. This relocation preserved the historic ride for future visitors.
Culture
The wooden horses display individual designs, colors, and expressions that show the craftsmanship of late 19th-century American amusement makers. Each figure tells a story of a time when artisans carved and painted every detail by hand.
Practical
The carousel is accessible year-round within Lake Compounce amusement park, where other rides, games, and food stands are also available. Visiting is straightforward from anywhere within the park grounds.
Did you know?
The carousel was specifically listed on the national register of historic places, recognizing its importance as a cultural treasure. The 12-sided building with its distinctive scalloped roof design sets it apart from typical modern rides.
