Shyh Wang Hall is a modern research computing building that stretches across a hillside within the Berkeley campus, with views over the UC Berkeley grounds and San Francisco Bay. The structure houses specialized supercomputer systems to support research projects and was architecturally designed by Perkins&Will.
The building opened in 2015 as part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, marking an expansion of computing infrastructure for scientific research. The facility reflects the growing importance of high-performance computing in modern scientific work.
The hall is named after Professor Shyh Wang, who made foundational advances in semiconductor lasers and quantum electronics during his time at UC Berkeley. Visitors sense the connection between the scientist and the cutting-edge research that now happens inside the building.
