Stebbins Hall, Student cooperative residence near University of California, Berkeley, United States.
Stebbins Hall is a student residence near the University of California, Berkeley with three floors and a basement housing about 40 students. The building contains single and double rooms, shared bathrooms, a kitchen for communal cooking, and multiple study spaces.
The building was originally built as a private residence for the Pierce family and became a student cooperative house in 1936 through the University Student Cooperative Association. This transition marked its transformation into a communal living space for students.
The house brings together engineering students, international scholars, and transfer students who share meals and communal spaces daily. Residents shape the atmosphere through their interactions and how they use the shared areas throughout the day.
The house is best explored during daytime hours when communal spaces are in use and you can see how residents actually live there. There are no formal public tours, but the surrounding campus and neighborhood are easily accessible.
Author Beverly Cleary lived here during her Berkeley years in one of the upstairs rooms. Additionally, handprints from a 1967 student prank remain visible on the exterior walls.
