Bowles Hall, building and residential college of the University of California, Berkeley
Bowles Hall is a residential college at the University of California, Berkeley, built in the Tudor architectural style with stone facades, arched windows, and decorative timber details. It sits on the main Berkeley campus and houses student dormitory rooms alongside shared living spaces.
Bowles Hall opened in 1929 as the first purpose-built men's dormitory on the UC Berkeley campus. It was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its place in the history of American campus architecture.
Bowles Hall is the oldest residence hall on the UC Berkeley campus, and that history shapes how students relate to the building today. Those who live there take part in long-standing house traditions that give the place a strong sense of shared identity.
Bowles Hall is a private student residence, so access inside is limited to residents and their guests. The exterior Tudor facade is visible from the public campus paths that run alongside the building.
The building was funded through a donation from Philip E. Bowles, a UC Berkeley alumnus who wanted to create a proper residence for male students on campus. After years of declining enrollment and deferred maintenance, Bowles Hall was fully renovated and reopened in 2016.
