Live Oak, Colonial plantation in Weyanoke, United States.
Live Oak is a two-story brick plantation house with stuccoed walls and round columns on its front and rear porches, located in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. The building sits at the center of open grounds that spread between the small towns of St. Francisville and Bayou Sara.
The house was built in 1808 while the area was still under Spanish rule, just before the United States took control of the Republic of West Florida in 1810. Its construction marks a moment when the region was passing from one government to another.
The main house served the local community as a school, an apothecary, and a post office at different points in time. Visitors today can still see how the layout of the building reflects this variety of public roles.
The property sits between two small towns in West Feliciana Parish and is best explored on foot, as the grounds around the house cover a good amount of open land. Giving yourself extra time is a good idea, since walking the full site takes longer than expected.
The house combines Spanish colonial construction methods with Greek Revival details, which is rarely seen in a single building. This mix reflects directly the political shifts the region went through in the early 19th century.
