Louisiana State Penitentiary is a high-security correctional facility in West Feliciana Parish that stretches across a wide tract along the Mississippi River. The grounds include multiple housing blocks, administrative buildings, and farmland within its secured perimeter.
The facility was established in 1844 on land that had been plantations worked by enslaved people. It later became a state prison run by Louisiana's Department of Corrections.
The Angola Prison Museum displays objects, photographs, and records that show how Louisiana's prison system developed over time. Visitors can see how conditions and methods inside the facility changed across the decades.
Visitors may enter the grounds on designated days and must pass through security checks and identification procedures. Access is limited to Friday through Sunday and requires advance registration.
The grounds hold a golf course built by inmates in 1974 and still in operation today. It remains the only prison-run golf course in North America.
