Afton Villa Gardens
Afton Villa Gardens, Historic garden in West Feliciana Parish, United States.
The gardens extend across 140 acres, featuring formal terraces, a boxwood maze, and a half-mile entrance drive lined with live oak trees.
The garden originated in 1849 when David Barrow and Susan Woolfolk transformed their plantation grounds into an elaborate landscape with Gothic Revival architectural elements.
The gardens represent the development of Southern landscape architecture, incorporating elements of Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical design principles from the 19th century.
The gardens remain open to visitors throughout the year, with guided tours available that showcase the preserved formal gardens and native Louisiana plants.
After a 1963 fire destroyed the mansion, the ruins were integrated into the garden design, creating an unusual combination of architectural remnants and natural elements.
