Majestic Building, commercial building in Indianapolis, Indiana
The Majestic Building is a ten-story commercial structure made of brick and limestone with a U-shaped footprint and large semi-circular arches across its facade. Its steel frame construction includes detailed stone ornaments such as acanthus and foliate carvings that face both Pennsylvania and Maryland Streets.
Designed by architect Oscar Bohlen and completed in 1896, this was Indianapolis's first building with a complete steel frame, making it the city's tallest structure at that time. It was constructed after a fire in 1894 destroyed the previous Gas Company offices on the same site.
The building earned its name from its grand facade featuring large arches and detailed stone carvings that convey importance and permanence. These design choices reflect how the city wanted its commercial spaces to look impressive and dignified during that era of growth.
Located at the corner of Pennsylvania and Maryland Streets in downtown Indianapolis, the building is easily accessible on foot with grand entrances facing both streets. Inside you will find offices, dining options, and other businesses open to the public during regular hours.
The building initially served as headquarters for the Indiana Gas Company and later housed the Indiana Farm Bureau Co-op before architecture firm Woollen, Molzan and Partners took it over in 1980, establishing their own office during restoration work. Today it operates a modern steakhouse called Prime 47, showing how historic spaces adapt to contemporary uses.
