Snelson-Brinker House, Historic pioneer house in Steelville, Missouri.
The Snelson-Brinker House is a double-pen log dwelling near Steelville with outbuildings and original fixtures from the pioneer era. The structure includes a smokehouse, root cellar, and cast iron water pump installed around 1910.
The house was built in 1834 by Levi Lane Snelson and initially served as a meeting place for the Crawford County Circuit Court. It changed hands to John Brinker in 1837, beginning a new chapter in the property's history.
The grounds hold a cemetery dating to 1837 where local residents and Cherokee people were buried during their forced westward journey.
The site is currently undergoing restoration efforts by the Snelson-Brinker Foundation following a destructive fire. Visitors should check conditions beforehand as access and viewing opportunities may vary depending on reconstruction progress.
The property witnessed a tragic execution that revealed a dark chapter in Missouri's justice system. A young person was put to death for murder here, becoming the youngest person executed in the state.
