Old Scots Graveyard, Historic cemetery in Marlboro Township, US.
The Old Scots Graveyard is a burial ground in Marlboro Township that holds colonial-era graves marked by brown sandstone headstones. The site contains numerous marked and unmarked burial sites scattered across its grounds.
The burial ground was established in 1685 and belonged to the first Presbyterian church in North America, with its meetinghouse built in 1692. These two institutions developed together as Scottish settlers created their religious community in the colony.
The gravestones feature Scottish thistle carvings that reflect the heritage of early settlers who came from Scotland to establish their community here. These stone carvings tell the story of people who brought their traditions across the ocean.
The cemetery is accessible on foot with open paths between the graves for visitors to walk through. It is best to wear comfortable shoes since the ground is uneven in places.
The grounds contain a notable monument marking the burial site of Reverend John Boyd, a significant early minister of the region. His memorial stands out among the other stones and reflects his important role in the community's religious history.
