Vincent Lugo Park, Urban park and National Register site in San Gabriel, US

Vincent Lugo Park is the largest park in San Gabriel, California, covering nine acres that include a lighted youth baseball diamond, a youth multi-purpose athletic field, picnic tables, barbecues, restrooms, and the Girl Scout House. Its best-known feature is La Laguna de San Gabriel, a sand-filled playground with 14 concrete sea creatures designed by Benjamin Dominguez, among them Minnie the whale, Stella the starfish, Ozzie the octopus, and three dolphins named Flipper, Speedy, and Peanut.

Vincent Lugo, San Gabriel's parks supervisor, turned a nine-acre city landfill into San Gabriel Municipal Park in 1965. The park was renamed Vincent Lugo Park in a 1988 re-dedication. The La Laguna playground was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 2017.

The La Laguna playground features 14 concrete sea creatures designed by Mexican-American artist Benjamin Dominguez, reflecting the artistic traditions of the local community.

The park provides picnic tables, barbecue grills, and restroom facilities for visitor convenience across the grounds. Baseball fields and designated youth activity areas allow for various recreational options for families and groups.

The nine-acre site was a city dump before Vincent Lugo, San Gabriel's parks supervisor, pushed to convert it into a municipal park in 1965. The playground's 14 cement sea creatures were nearly demolished in 2006 as safety hazards; the Friends of La Laguna formed to save them, and the group's 2008 preservation report won awards from the LA Conservancy and California Preservation Foundation in 2009.
