Kiholo bay

Kiholo Bay extends for two miles along the Big Island's shore, featuring dark sand beaches, lava rocks, and numerous tidal pools.

King Kamehameha I constructed extensive stone walls in 1820 to create a productive fishing pond, which was later damaged by the 1859 Mauna Loa eruption.

The northern section contains Wainanaliʻi Pond, a traditional Hawaiian fishing area that now serves as a protected zone for green sea turtles.

Visitors can reach the bay through Highway 19, where a gravel road or walking trail leads to weekend camping spots that require advance permits.

The Keanalele Freshwater Pool sits within an ancient lava tube, creating a natural swimming area where fresh and salt water combine.
