Mathew H. Ritchey House
Mathew H. Ritchey House, Historical mansion in Newtonia, Missouri, United States.
The Mathew H. Ritchey House is a two-story brick structure with a side-gabled roof, sandstone base, and a front portico. The building features chimneys on the interior ends and sits within grounds marked with interpretive signage about the surrounding historical events.
The house was built around 1840 and witnessed two significant Civil War battles. It served as a military hospital during the conflict in 1862.
The house displays exhibits about the Ritchey family and Civil War artifacts. Visitors can also see a mural honoring Native American participation in the Battle of Newtonia.
Much of the property is open to visitors with interpretive markers guiding the experience. Plan time for a leisurely walk to explore the grounds and read the informational signage throughout the site.
Blood stains from wounded soldiers during Civil War battles remained visible on the floors for years. Residents painted certain areas black to conceal these marks, creating a physical reminder of the structure's wartime role.
