319 Broadway, Office building in Tribeca, Manhattan, United States
319 Broadway is a five-story building in Tribeca with a cast-iron facade decorated with ornate Corinthian columns and arched window tops on each floor. Today it contains office space and a restaurant on the ground level.
The building was constructed in 1870 by architects D. & J. Jardine and remains the only surviving structure from the original group of buildings that once stood on this site. Its front stoop was removed in 1912 to modernize the street entrance.
The building shows how Lower Manhattan changed from a residential neighborhood to a business district in the 1800s. You can see this shift in how the space functions today as both offices and a restaurant.
The building is located on an active street in Tribeca and is accessible from street level. It's best viewed during daytime hours when the offices and restaurant are open.
The entire cast-iron facade was manufactured by Daniel D. Badger's Architectural Iron Works and still retains many original double-hung wooden windows from its construction period. These windows showcase the craftsmanship and industrial innovation of iron casting in that era.
