Stillwater Reservoir, body of water

Stillwater Reservoir is a large body of water in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, surrounded by forest, rocks, and numerous small islands. The shoreline alternates between sandy stretches and rocky points, and the water shifts in appearance depending on the season and weather.

The land around the reservoir is managed by New York State and has been open to outdoor recreation for generations. Over time, management plans were adjusted to allow different uses while keeping the natural features of the area intact.

The reservoir draws people who value simple pleasures of nature and quiet outdoor living away from crowds. Visitors follow unwritten rules like Leave No Trace principles, camp on designated sites, and prefer solitude and self-reliance over busy spots.

There is no cell service in the area, so visitors should bring offline maps and a GPS device before setting out. The boat ramp is available for launching, and everyone must register at the kiosk on arrival and follow the posted safety rules, especially around submerged rocks and floating debris.

The water level of the reservoir changes noticeably with the seasons, causing rocks and old tree stumps to appear and disappear throughout the year. Since 2014, a local enthusiast has been building detailed navigation maps using sonar readings and satellite images to help boaters avoid these hidden hazards.
