Proxy Falls

The waterfall features two distinct drops, with the main cascade plunging 226 feet over volcanic cliffs into a pool surrounded by dense forest.

The waterfall formed during the last glacial period when ice carved through volcanic rock, creating the hanging valley where water now flows.

Photographers from across the region gather at the falls throughout different seasons to capture its changing appearance against the forest backdrop.

The 1.5-mile loop trail from Highway 242 leads visitors through lava fields and forest to multiple viewpoints of both Upper and Lower Proxy Falls.

The water disappears into porous volcanic soil at the base of the falls without forming a visible surface stream or continuing watercourse.
