Herrick Lake County Forest Preserve, Forest preserve in Wheaton, US
Herrick Lake County Forest Preserve is a protected natural area with woods, a lake, and a network of crushed stone and asphalt paths near Wheaton. The ground rolls gently in places, with marshes and open grasses south of the water, while the shoreline stays close to tall trees and quiet fishing spots.
The land once belonged to a farm settled by Ira Herrick long before the area became a public preserve. Later, local efforts to protect open space turned the old fields and woods into a place where anyone could walk and watch the seasons change.
Kayak and canoe rentals from late spring through early fall turn the lake into a social spot where families paddle close to shore and wave to people fishing from the bank. The boat house area becomes a gathering point on warm weekends, with coolers, folding chairs, and the sound of paddles tapping against hulls.
Two entrances off Butterfield Road and Herrick Road make the site easy to reach, and trail signs help you stay oriented. Walking shoes with good grip work well after rain, and the loop around the lake is short enough for most visitors to finish comfortably.
The lake freezes into a broad white surface in deep winter, and people walk out onto it with careful steps when the cold lasts long enough. You can also see old tree stumps along the trails that have rotted into soft shapes, which children often mistake for sleeping animals.
