Qasr Shemamok, Archaeological site near Erbil, Iraq

The excavation area spans 70 hectares, with a central tell rising 30 meters above the plain and a lower town extending southward.

The site, known as Kilizu during the Assyrian Empire, served as a provincial capital and contains remains from Hurrian through Sassanian periods.

Archaeological teams discovered clay nails, cuneiform tablets, and a palace belonging to Middle Assyrian ruler Adad-nirari I within the excavation boundaries.

The site lies 30 kilometers south of Erbil on the western bank of the Shiwazor river, approximately 25 kilometers from ancient Nimrud.

Researchers identified the Terjan tablet at this location, providing evidence of construction activities predating the Middle Assyrian period.
