Labuan War Cemetery, Military cemetery in Labuan, Malaysia.
Labuan War Cemetery is a military burial ground in Labuan, Malaysia, containing over 3900 graves spread across maintained grounds. More than half of those buried are unidentified soldiers from World War II, whose names do not appear on their headstones.
The cemetery was established in December 1945 and holds soldiers who died during the Japanese occupation and the Sandakan Death Marches. These events shaped this place as a monument to military losses in the region.
The headstones display inscriptions in multiple languages, reflecting the diverse Commonwealth nations whose soldiers rest here. Walking through the grounds, visitors notice the different names and symbols that show how many countries lost soldiers in this place.
The cemetery sits less than one kilometer from Labuan Airport and remains open throughout the year for visitors. The accessible grounds allow you to view the graves at a leisurely pace.
The cemetery contains two memorial structures: the Labuan Memorial and the Labuan Cremation Memorial, honoring different groups of fallen soldiers. These separate structures show how different burial practices were for those resting here.
