Lapau, Royal ceremonial hall in Pusat Bandar, Brunei.
The Lapau is a ceremonial hall in Bandar Seri Begawan that combines traditional Bruneian design with modern construction techniques. It contains dedicated spaces for state functions, royal ceremonies, and legislative council meetings.
The hall was completed in 1968 as a replacement for an earlier structure on the site. It later served as the location for the coronation of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah as the 29th Sultan of Brunei.
The hall hosts ceremonies like the Gendang Jaga-Jaga ensemble performances and Naubat traditions, which mark royal celebrations and periods of mourning for the sultanate. These events shape how people understand the connection between the monarchy and national identity.
The venue is dedicated to state ceremonial events and official functions, so access is restricted to certain times. It is advisable to check in advance whether the hall is open to visitors, as it may be reserved for royal functions.
Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III personally selected design elements for the building, creating a blend of modern construction and Bruneian tradition. This personal involvement makes the hall a reflection of one ruler's architectural vision.
