Teng Yun Temple, Chinese temple in Brunei

Teng Yun Temple is a Chinese Buddhist temple in Pusat Bandar, Brunei. Its entrance is marked by a red-and-gold gateway, and the prayer hall holds altars with figures of Buddhas and deities, incense burners and hanging lanterns. Worshippers pass through a courtyard between the gate and the main hall.

Teng Yun Temple stands in Pusat Bandar as one of Brunei's Chinese Buddhist temples, built by the local Chinese community for worship and gatherings. It has been maintained through community support rather than state patronage, and remains in active religious use in the capital today.

Teng Yun Temple holds its main observance on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, when devotees bring incense, fruit and paper offerings to the altars. The temple's name, meaning "Soaring Cloud", is displayed on a plaque above the entrance. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is the principal figure honoured here.

The location is easily accessible with open pathways suitable for most visitors. It's helpful to check opening hours beforehand and wear respectful clothing when entering the prayer spaces.

Teng Yun Temple sits on a corner of Jalan Sultan in Pusat Bandar, a short walk from the waterfront. Look up at the roof ridge: it carries ceramic figures and cut-and-paste porcelain shards (jiannian) set by southern Chinese craftsmen, a technique rarely seen in Borneo. The temple is also known locally as the Teng Yun Kong Temple, and its name is written on the lintel above the main entrance.
