Gadong Night Market, Open-air marketplace in Gadong district, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.

Gadong Night Market is an open-air marketplace in the Gadong district with four rows of vendor stalls arranged on solid flooring. Covered walkways provide protection from tropical downpours for both visitors and sellers.

The marketplace underwent comprehensive modernization in 2017 with improved infrastructure and better facilities for vendors and visitors. These renovations transformed it into a contemporary trading facility.

Vendors here prepare traditional Bruneian dishes like nasi lemak and grilled meat wrapped in banana leaves, which visitors enjoy daily. The cooking methods follow family recipes passed down through generations.

The market opens daily from 4 PM to 11 PM and offers a wide range of prepared dishes, fresh produce, and traditional snacks. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be ready to navigate narrow passages between stalls.

Many vendors specialize in tong keng, a local dish of grilled chicken tail with a distinctive taste. This specialized offering makes the market particularly interesting for street food enthusiasts.

What to See and Visit in Brunei

Brunei is a small sultanate on the northern coast of Borneo, a nation that gained its wealth from oil reserves and has preserved its Malay Islamic culture. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, blends modern mosques with traditional water villages, while the interior remains largely covered in rainforest. Visitors will find gilded domes next to stilt houses, royal collections next to local markets, and tropical trails at the edges of the city. Places to see include the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque with its man-made lagoon, the sprawling Kampong Ayer with its wooden walkways over the water, and Ulu Temburong National Park, accessible only by boat and through dense jungle. The Royal Regalia Museum displays crowns and ceremonial chariots of the Sultan's family. Gadong Night Market serves local food at open stalls in the evening. Beaches like Serasa lie quietly along the coast, and temples such as Teng Yun Temple add to the religiously diverse cityscape.
