Teluk Bahang, Fishing village and coastal bay in northwestern Penang, Malaysia.
Teluk Bahang is a coastal fishing town and bay on the northwestern tip of Penang Island, Malaysia. The settlement sits between the open sea and a steep forested hillside that rises directly behind the shoreline.
The village developed as a small fishing settlement and kept that role for many generations. From the second half of the 20th century, visitors began arriving, drawn by the nearby beaches and forest trails, while the fishing community carried on.
The name Teluk Bahang means roughly "warm bay" in Malay, a reference to the sheltered water at the foot of the forested hills. At the small jetty, fishing boats return in the early morning and the catch is sorted on the spot.
The town is reachable by public bus from central Penang, with the route ending near the main village area. Bring rain cover and comfortable footwear, since showers can happen at any time of day.
A reservoir built close to the shore stores fresh water for a large part of Penang and sits right next to what has always been a fishing community. The contrast between that concrete dam and the wooden boats moored nearby is something visitors rarely expect to find.
