Penang Botanic Gardens, Botanical garden in George Town, Malaysia.
Penang Botanic Gardens is a 29-hectare space in George Town featuring diverse tropical plant collections organized into themed zones that showcase different species and landscapes. The site includes thousands of trees, flowering plants, and other vegetation distributed throughout marked sections.
The gardens were established in 1884 on the site of a former quarry and initially cultivated spices and rubber plants during British colonial times. The space gradually transformed into a public botanical garden serving the community.
The garden serves as a daily gathering place where locals exercise early in the morning and families spend leisure time among the greenery. Walking through, you notice how the space has become woven into the routine of the neighborhood.
The site is open daily from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM with free entry, featuring well-marked trails suitable for walking, running, and cycling. Early morning visits are best to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures typical of the tropical climate.
A water facility at one of the waterfalls was originally built in 1804 to supply drinking water to ships visiting Penang port. This historical structure still stands within the gardens, marking a period when the location served a completely different purpose.
