Bario is a small settlement in the Kelabit Highlands of Sarawak, located at about 1200 meters elevation and surrounded by rice paddies and mountains. The village consists of simple wooden houses and traditional longhouses clustered together, connected by paths that invite exploration.
Bario has been inhabited by the Kelabit people for many generations, preserving traditional practices to the present day. A plane wreck from 1964 lying in the fields recalls earlier transportation links and the challenges of connecting this isolated region to the outside world.

Getting there involves a small plane flight from Miri, with luggage strictly limited due to the aircraft size. Bring enough cash since there are no ATMs, and book accommodations in advance as homestays are limited and usually fill up quickly.
A decommissioned Twin Pioneer aircraft from 1964 remains preserved in a field, telling the story of early aviation in this remote area. Visitors can see the rusted remains and imagine the events that unfolded on that rainy day.
